  • I wish they can offer LLMs though an API with some good privacy (not a UI) since i can't come across any

SamDc73 · Oct 30, 2026 · comment in “Proton goes all in on using AI”

  • Does it though? It arguably illustrates how the economics of building custom specialized small sub-frontier LLMs and building an service around them that can easily be replicated by open tools wrapping either frontier LLMs for equal or better quality or personally-controlled open LLMs for privacy doesn't work, especially in a market where privacy is a selling point.

dragonwriter · Oct 14, 2026 · comment in “Character.ai's Bankruptcy Documents Show the Economics of AI Don't Work”

  • Most daily commands like launching and moving around sites/apps happen without AI, but I agree with the privacy concern and will definitely look into utilizing local AI. Smaller models, like Haiku, I have found to already struggle during multi-step tasks, so I expect local model capabilities to reduce performance further.

SaarthRanka · Oct 13, 2026 · comment in “Show HN: Atticus – Hold-to-talk voice assistant for macOS that runs on Claude -p”

  • Maybe, I always say "let's write a plan and refine it" which ends up being a nice rubber duck session to keep claude and friends from going off the rails implementing things like privacy or encryption or some other rabbit hole when I just need it to do a few features at a time so I can review while it starts the next few things.

anarticle · Sep 26, 2026 · comment in “Plan mode is dead”

  • I noticed that in the Screen Time menus, "Content and Privacy" restrictions can be toggled on. From there seems to be an additional "Siri" menu that lets me change the allowed Siri version from Siri Classic to Siri AI as well as options to turn off the global writing tools/assistance (which turns off the annoying Siri bubble on every textbox now).

kotaKat · Sep 21, 2026 · comment in “macOS 27: Workaround to avoid downloading AI models and save storage”

  • They have since obscured the Index feature out of sight recently and I’m not sure how it even works anymore. This granular control not only helped with privacy, but it also helped make everything more efficient because the AI didn’t waste time and tokens looking at files that aren’t relevant.

iJohnDoe · Sep 12, 2026 · comment in “Astra for Coding: Why Are We Doing This Again?”

  • I still struggle with local llm being a reason to drop insane money on one of these - they are targeting people who want high performance local LLMs, that value privacy over using 3rd party api, but also dont want to use Nvidia? small part of the pie by any reckoning?

    gehsty · Aug 25, 2026 · comment in “Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra”

  • nokeep.ai - private, uncensored AI -- launched it cause most folks who want privacy or less censorship attempt to run models locally but that obviously doesn't work unless you invest in hardware / want speed etc.

nikshepsvn · Aug 24, 2026 · comment in “Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2026 – Show and tell”

  • I never had an issue with Auto mode in Claude Code. It used to be the same with Codex, until one day it became entirely unusable, rejecting even git operations out of concern for the privacy settings of my repository that it "cannot verify".

user43928 · Aug 6, 2026 · comment in “Humans missed 1 in 3 threats approving AI agent commands across 40k game runs”

  • This submission was written by a human. microide's focus is performance and privacy, I was very tired of having AI integrated on every tool (ironic, I know, having vibecoded this one), and the decline in software performance.

gef3233 · Jul 5, 2026 · story in “Show HN: microide, a 100% vibecoded IDE that LLM agents can drive”

  • Except privacy and use cases that are blocked by cloud models (e.g. reverse engineering), local LLMs are currently an expensive toy. When I try to program with a local LLM (I'm on a 32/128 GB system), I end up wasting time compared to a cloud LLM.

pizza234 · Jun 29, 2026 · comment in “Qwen 3.6 27B is the sweet spot for local development”

  • Related to this, I hate how aggressively Google pushes Gemini and all of the privacy implications involved with that.

lpolovets · Jun 2, 2026 · comment in “Gmail thinks I'm stupid, so I left”

  • Edit: to add, did AI improved the average person life? Nope, if not increasing the costs, or tracking and violating their privacy, it did flood the internet with slop, or a frustrating useless AI chat support.. from an average person perspective, it added none to their quality of life, it didn’t make things cheaper, it didn’t improve their travels, it didn’t magically made them teleport, and so on, instead, AI was u…

tamimio · Apr 25, 2026 · comment in “The AI industry is discovering that the public hates it”

  • Same privacy focused ethos -- self hosted, no internet, no big tech, et al. Designed to fix that pain point in the HA eco-system -- you want the fluidity of a LLM, but without the compute and delay.

    matt-cicero · Apr 16, 2026 · comment in “[dead]”

  • The best experience is with other tools like Cline where you've had to use a developer based account which is API usage based already. But Gemini's API based usage also has a free tier and if that doesn't work for you (they train on your data) and you've never signed up before you get several hundred dollars in free credits that expire after 90 days.

matt_heimer · Apr 5, 2026 · comment in “Codex is switching to API pricing based usage for all users”

  • Values and privacy are way down in their list. I wish people would not buy/install AI related features by big tech and be more discerning, but that is likely a pipe dream.

ghm2199 · Apr 2, 2026 · comment in “DRAM pricing is killing the hobbyist SBC market”

  • As a result I underused the device since it was annoying. I recently took their .apk and dropped it in a new empty project folder, instructed Claude Code w/ GLM 5 to reverse engineer the app, assess it for security and privacy concerns out of curiosity and then to probe the USB device to figure out why it doesn't work like a normal UVC webcam.

evilduck · Mar 29, 2026 · comment in “Hacking old hardware by renaming to .zip [video]”

  • What kind of alternate reality are you living in? I wish you would disclose your credentials (though I admit privacy is an inalienable right of yours) so I could place the biggest AI hype-man on this forum.

sph · Mar 7, 2026 · comment in “Tell HN: I'm 60 years old. Claude Code has re-ignited a passion”

  • Even leaving privacy/security issues aside, and even if it gets super smart and capable, it feels like it would have a distancing effect from my own life, and undermine my own agency in shaping it. I'm not against AI in general, and some assistant-like functionality that functions on demand to search my digital footprint and handle necessary but annoying administrative tasks seems useful.

dasil003 · Feb 21, 2026 · comment in “Every company building your AI assistant is now an ad company”

  • anything cloud-hosted means my codebase context leaves my machine. The setup cost was always too high and privacy never guaranteed, so I stuck with CLAUDE.md files.

rendro · Feb 8, 2026 · story in “Show HN: Sediment – Local semantic memory for AI agents (Rust, single binary)”

  • To be fair, I think everyone but Google has been missing the boat on LLMs as platform integrations. I call out Google as an exception because Gemini when it works correctly from an integration point of view can actually do some cool stuff like predictive suggestions in messaging based on context, though I wish it was all on device stuff, as on a privacy level I don’t trust Google
