This week I have done considerably less work, and 2 days in, 54 % of Max usage is gone. I hate this bait and switch cycle, and seeing how OpenAI cut its limits (5x raise from 0.1x api price to 0.5x api price for their max plan, so new $500 plan gets less usage than previous $200 plan) I think this will get worse still.

Show HN: OpenDocBot – bring your own model to Word, Excel and PowerPoint I got tired of the lock-in and black-box nature of AI inside MS Office.

despite that, reviewing it was a UI challenge, not code, with UI libraries, the breaking changes are usually in the UI so you can't see it from the code, and we did have a special process to review it, although on the code side, Github was a nightmare to deal with reviewing this PR, we noticed that github was the bottleneck here since it lays out the code changes without much context and is already hard to navigate …

Yes, these two are good use cases. With no harness lock-in, a fallback and context handoff can solve LLM vendor service unreliable.

Part of the appeal of a canvas like this is spacial memory: that things stay where you put them. So any AI based reorganization could be a frustrating rug-pull for users that value this feature.

Centralized GenAI will also become obsolete as soon as local LLMs are capable enough to satisfy the same use cases sufficiently. Artificial lock-in simply doesn't work in the long run: the incentive structures will always motivate customers to cut out middlemen, and peripheral markets to develop around providing the tools for doing exactly that.

It's an experience anyone who used Google BigQuery would be familiar with: start with an amazing engineering product, and keep continuously degrading the value users get out of a fixed dollar spend. It's like Google doesn't understand that lock-in doesn't work when customers can easily switch to Claude or GPT.

Six months later, those pinned versions have known CVEs, are approaching end-of-life, or have breaking changes queued up. The person who built it doesn't understand the dependency tree because they never chose those dependencies deliberately — the LLM did.

Simply selling the subscription on its own without any lock-in isn't the goal, because it's clearly not profitable, nor is it currently meant to be, it's a loss leader. The actual goal is to get people invested long-term in the Claude Code ecosystem as a whole, so that when the financial reality catches up to the hype and prices have to go up 5x to start making real money, those people feel compelled to keep paying,…
